You’ve got the bike of your dreams, your leathers, helmet and boots and you can’t wait to take your motorbike for a spin! However, before you head off it is worth considering if you have everything necessary to make your motoring both safer and easier.

Obviously the kit you pack will depend on where you’re going, how long you are going for and the weather conditions you expect to be riding in, but with a little organisation and forward planning the kit you pack may well save you a lot of time and money.

In hazardous riding conditions, your kit could even save your life! Leathers, helmet and boots are necessary attire for bikers as they offer protection against the elements and protect the most vulnerable areas of your body. Not only can you be penalised for not wearing the proper biking attire when riding your bike you could also end up in hospital, or worse, if you are involved in an accident and not wearing protective biking gear.

As well as your helmet, gloves and your riding leathers, here are a number of other items that are important to consider before heading out on your bike:

  • Extra gloves
It is always useful to have a spare pair of biking gloves, in case of any damage caused to your regular pair or if you are riding through adverse weather, extra gloves will keep your hands warm.
  • Dry socks
An extra pair of clean, dry socks is essential if you are travelling in the winter. They are also handy if you are prone to blisters as the extra cushioning on your feet will make your ride more comfortable.
  • Map
If you are travelling somewhere you are not familiar with, an up-to-date map is essential to keep you on the right track.
  • First aid kit
Another essential item to pack is a first aid kit, which can be useful in treating both minor injuries and can help in emergency situations as well.
  • Emergency blanket
If you are travelling through cold, wet or windy weather it is worth packing an emergency blanket in case of emergencies. Keeping your body temperature up is extremely important if you have been involved in an accident or stranded and are awaiting emergency services.
  • Repair kit.
If your bike develops a problem on the road, it is always handy to have a tool kit at hand to make any necessary repairs. It is important to keep your bike in good order and yourself safe. Your kit should include: latex gloves, mini-Air pump, torch, spare bulbs, duct tape, engine oil, and lubrication.
  • All necessary paperwork
License and ownership papers are important to have nearby just in case you are required to show them to a law enforcement official.
  • Mobile phone and charger
Just in case you end up in a sticky situation such as a breakdown.

Packing some of the above suggestions in your kit will hopefully help you have a safer and more comfortable journey and some of them may even save yours or another motorist’s life if the worst was to happen! So before you jump on your bike and go make sure your kit is organised.
