The construction industry is experiencing a boom in job availability. This is due to a 1.2% increase in all new work. Therefore, if you are out of work and looking for a new job there are lots for you to apply for, none more so than those on Friday-Ad, check them out today!

Jobs available…

Tradesmen & Labourers

There is a number of different ways you can get into the construction industry, but the most common route would be to learn a trade. These include everything from Electricians to Bricklayers, from Welders to PlasterersCarpenters to Joiners. To become qualified as an electrician or plumber, you will need to complete industry recognised training and qualification.

However, with jobs such as bricklayers, plasterers, carpenters and joiners this isn’t 100% necessary as you can start as a labourer to gain experience. This does mean that it might take longer to learn your trade to a high level.

Experience also reflects in your starting salary, as well as the type of construction job you are after. A bricklayer can expect to receive around £16,000 a year as a starting salary, whereas, a qualified electrician can earn up to £21,000 a year with the national average sitting at £25,000. As well as this, the salary increases if you progress to the position of construction manager, where you can expect a salary of over £30,000.

Other Average UK Salaries –

  • Carpenter £24,000
  • Plumber £22,000
  • Plasterer £23,000

Engineering

Engineering jobs are available across different brackets of the industry, including civil engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering and structural engineering. The latter work closely with architects in the design and construction process in the creation of buildings and similar structures.

Unlike bricklayers, plasterers, carpenters and joiners; where you can learn the trade on the job – to a certain level of quality – all engineering jobs require a degree or postgraduate masters degree. Civil engineers in particular, often start out as part of a company’s graduate scheme and learn under the guidance of a mentor on the job.

When it comes to salary, due to the higher level of qualification needed, the average starting salary for a civil engineer is in the region of £26,000 with structural engineers being slightly higher at £28,000.

Architecture

To work in Architecture, like engineering, a qualification at degree or masters degree is needed, and a recent study showed that with the less amount of experience you had in the field of architecture, the higher the amount software skills was necessary. Whereas, if you had a substantial amount of experience in the industry, the less software experience was required.

Due to the level of degree earned, and time spent to earn that degree – 7 years – you can imagine that the average starting salary for an architect would reflect that and rightly so. An architect fresh into the industry can expect to earn anywhere between £27,000 to £29,000 dependant on experience. However, if they were to make their way up the ranks they can expect to earn as much as £42,000 for a Project Architect position and even as much as £48,000 for the position of Senior Architect.
