Wedding reception entertainment ideas

Your wedding reception should add to your special day and be memorable for you and your guests. When the formality of the ceremony is over, the evening entertainment is a chance for people to relax, socialise and let their hair down. Here we’ve outlined just a few options for evening entertainment.

Put simply, a good DJ should be able to keep you and your guests on the dancefloor until your feet hurt! They should know the tunes that get people’s attention, but you can also provide them with the song you have picked for your first dance, as well as a list other songs that you would like played during the course of the evening. Try not to give the DJ too many requests though – you want the music to flow naturally.

Live singer or band
Whether you enjoy listening to pop music, blues or soul classics, you’re sure to be able to find a band or singer to suit your tastes. You could opt for a swing band or a tribute artist to entertain you and your guests. Whatever music style you opt for, everybody will enjoy dancing and singing along.

Magic acts are very versatile, because they can amuse your guests while they are enjoying arrival drinks, the wedding breakfast or as part of the evening entertainment. Everyone from young children to the grandparents are sure to enjoy card tricks and other clever illusions.

It’s a pretty safe bet that games such as roulette, Texas Hold’em Poker and blackjack will go down well with everyone joining your wedding celebrations. Croupiers will provide all guests with special playing ‘money’ and explain the rules before the fun gets underway.

Fun and games
If your wedding is in the summer months, you could have a summer fete theme and invest in games such as giant snakes and ladders and jenga, or fairground games such as a coconut shy. Little kids (and the supposedly grown up ones) are sure to enjoy themselves.

Photo booth
A photo booth is a great way of capturing quirky photos of the wedding party and guests. You can even include some silly props such as wigs, moustaches, feather boas, hats and glasses to add to the fun! The end results will be great to look back on in years to come and a great reminder of the fun that was had.

A firework display is the perfect end to a magical day. A professional display is guaranteed to catch the attention of your guests When they pause to watch, they will be able to reflect on the events of the day.

Think of the kids…
Weddings can be boring occasions for youngsters and keeping them entertained for the entire day is not an easy task. You could try making a party pack to amuse them while they wait for their food – include a colouring book and pencils, some bubbles, and other small bits and pieces. You could also hire professional children’s entertainers such as balloon modellers and face painters – these are sure to keep little ones laughing and smiling.

Some more top tips

  • When you’re looking for entertainment, a whole wealth of information can be found by searching on the internet and looking in bridal magazines. Attending wedding fairs might also provide you with some inspiration.
  • Ask other couples you know what entertainment they had at their wedding to get some ideas.
  • You could also ask staff at your wedding venue if they have any recommendations.
  • When you contact a singer, band or DJ, ask them to provide references from previous clients, and see if you can go along to a gig before you commit.
  • Always check with your venue that the entertainment you are picking is appropriate. For example, they may only be allowed a DJ or live band until a certain time at night.
  • Once you’ve made your choice, confirm dates and times in writing and get terms of conditions.
  • If your budget allows, who says you have to limit yourself to one entertainment option? You could choose to have a photo booth, magician and DJ to make your day even more spectacular.
